VOTE for the new official SDL logo now

Hi,

we received 48 (!) submissions for the new official
SDL Logo. Great! Thank you all.

As announced, I’d like to stop accepting new submissions.
Please look at http://www.libsdl.de/contest if your logo
is really there (I hope I haven’t forgot anybody).

Now it’s on you, to VOTE for your favourite logo.

http://www.libsdl.de/contest

How to vote:

Everybody on this list and the german SDL list can vote
for up to 5(!) logos. Please send a email with your
(up to) 5 favourite logos (pleae email the number of the
logo, listed on the website) to:

vote at libsdl.de

You can discuss the logos here on the list or can send me personal
notes to marco at libsdl.de. But keep in mind: only the mails going
to vote at libsdl.de will be counted (they are automatically filtered
out, so do not send anything you expect an answer).

After ONE WEEK, the voting will stop (this should be enough), and
I’ll post a detailed, but anonymous statistic about the result.

And now in short:

watch at http://www.libsdl.de/contest, find your 5 favourite
logos, and send their numbers to vote at libsdl.de

Thank you

Ciao–
Marco

Hello,

As my logos are similar, a non-condorcet method increases the chances of
vote-splitting, so if it’s not too late, can I request that logos 6,7,
and 4 be removed?

(PS. If it’s not too late, could we please use the condorcet method?
I’ve even written up some software to make it easier)

It’s too late to change the system, but you told me your 3 logos
before which are similar, and I’ll add the votes together in the end.

This is okay, because they are very similar and the other put together
their similar logos within one logo. So don’t worry. The voting will
be fair

Hope this is okay.

If you have every voter supply a “passphrase” to be published with the result we the votees can be as anonymous as we like, while being able to see that our votes were recieved (and presumably counted

Just a suggestion, though a wee bit late maybe. On Sun, 1 Feb 2004 14:15:22 +0100, Marco Kraus wrote:

wouldn’t it be better when sam and the other sdl owners choose the most
representative logo?

I hate to say this, but most of those logos arnt suitable to begin with.
Few of them can be used for print because they are too complex, or have
strong colors that cannot be represented in the cmyk colorspace.

I encorage all of you to vote for simple logo designs like 1, 2, 8, 21, or 22.On 01-Feb-2004, Marco Kraus wrote:

i figure in this case democratic is best because the logos that are apealing
to most people will be the winning logo(s), which is what we are going for
after all isnt it?

I disagree. There are only a few (44, 23) that can’t degrade nicely for
the purpose of printing to different medias.

I think it is safe to assume that the artists have retained their
"source" versions of the logos and that print-friendly versions can be
made easily.

No problem, we’ll do a ‘simpler’ more elegant version for uses that
require a different kind of logo.

E.g. http://www.userwebs.dk/gjoel/sdl_simple.jpg
to go with #9

Regards,
\Mikkel Gjoel
PS. http://www.userwebs.dk/gjoel/sdl_simple.jpf in jpeg2000.

If you add up the votes for similar logos, doesn’t that bias the votes in
favor of logo sets with multiple entries, and against those with only one
entry? For example, if there are 5 entries, two of which are similar, and
if I vote for all 5 of them, the one with two similar entries wins because
my vote gets counted twice for that entry.

To remove the bias, votes for similar logos should be counted only once
per voter. This has some consequences, so may I suggest the following?:

(1) The fact that votes to similar entries will be counted only
once should be made clear to the voters so they don’t waste
their votes voting for similar entries.

(2) If an entry with similar entries win, the one with the most
votes (out of the similar entries) should be used whenever
possible, with other variants of the logo used appropriately.
For example, if an entry with color and b&w versions are
voted on, and the b&w version gets more votes, then the b&w
version should be used as the primary logo even if we can print the
logo in color on T-shirts for the same price… with some discretion
from whoever that uses the logo and the community.

(3) It should be made clear which logos are considered similar.
I may consider 1 & 2 similar but others may not. So which
entries are considered to be similar by the voting system?

(4) Finally, people should be allowed to re-cast their vote
in case they already voted for the entries that are similar.
(If it isn’t already possible.)

These are just suggestions. I don’t feel too strongly about any of the
above as long as we get a decent logo. But I don’t wanna see bickering
after we talley the votes, so…

Just my 0.02 euros…

I’ll just try do do the vote as good as I can, but I can never satisfy
everybody. But this is okay. I try to do a fair vote with not too much

Hi!

I’ve just looked over the logos and seen that entry number 23 uses possibly
copyrighted logos of different operating systems. I think that at least the
BeOS logo, the Solaris logo, the Amiga ball (nice to see this one at all ;-),
the MacOS logo and the Windows logo might have some sort of restrictions
coming with them. Does anyone know more about that?

Gregor

I got 90 emails, with up to 5 votes…so i got over 400 votes 'till
today. The logo we just discuss got 9 votes overall.

So i don’t think we really need to force a decision about this logo.
