Why not use a bbs instead of the mail list

hello guys,

i’m wondering why we don’t just use a bbs or a forum istead of this mail list?
'cause, the mail list is too old fashioned and so inconvenient, it is
a big kerfuffle to post here.

if SDL insists on mail list, then google group is a much better
choice. it is free and more powerful.

cheers

Hi bill…
sry, i?m new here…
but if you use gmail, man, it get very simple to use maillisting…

Careful. That’s my bread and butter you’re talking about. I’m an email
admin.

The problem with a BBS is that you have to make a point of going there.
Some people have difficulty disciplining themselves. Most people are
in their email frequently enough to be aware of what messages are there
and will act to read them or clear them out.

Kerfuffle indeed. That just a bunch of pippydoo.

Well, there are forums such as gamedev.net that have sections for open
libraries and yet the mailing list remains busy as ever. Must be a
reason for that.

alright, but, you know, the new beta google group can be a mirror host
of an existed mail list, which means we can build a new mirror google
group while still maintaining this mail list. and the data on both can
be updated synchronistically.

http://groups-beta.google.com/

the web master only needs to register a free group and adds the
group’s mail address to sdl at libsdl.org’s auto forward list.

i feel that forum is much more convenient, 'cause i do not want my
mail box to be stuffed by news letters.

I just have a label and filter set up on Gmail that puts all my SDL
emails in a label group and skips it from the inbox. I barely notice,
only about once a month when I get my mailing list reminder from the
daemon.

Best.

I always have my email client open, so a mailing list is more convenient for
me. I find when I have to use a forum, I always forget to check it. Most
forums have an email notification on activity which essentially is like a
mailing list (i.e. getting an email stating that someone said something) but
without the convenience of saying what that “something” was.

I also like newsgroups since I use Kontact as my email client (kontact has an
integrated news reader).

Just my 2 cents.

BTW, what is a bbs

No more so than myself. Samuel Morse introduced me to my first BBS.

I thought the SDL lists were already doing that via Usenet proper…
Did that stop?

Wow, what mail client are you using again? I’ve got my procmail set up
to drop my various list mails into separate folders, and then just
browse through them with Mutt.

When I’m in a hurry, I just check my main inbox… no list mail ends up there,
only the stuff mailed directly to me.

Well, that just goes to show that there are at least two kinds of people
in the world, people like you and people like me. I would most likely
drop off the list completely if it were moved to a bbs type system
because they are so slow and such a hassle to use. Not to mention that
they are soooooo 1970s… All in all I find those sorts of things to be
a royal pain in the ass.

I was setup in a similar way for years with Eudora. Then I upgraded to Thunderbird, imported all my folders and filters, and continue with roughly the same setup. My girlfriend uses Yahoo! Mail, possibly the most ghetto common mail service outside of AOL, and even she’s setup with folders and filters.

In short, if you’re using anything more advanced then PINE to check your mail, there is no excuse for a mailing list to be cluttering up your inbox.

Yep, and it appears to work just fine. I think I might stop mail
delivery on the SDL list and start using the newsgroup.–
