Why not use a bbs instead of the mail list

There are not many users because it just started. Someone in #sdl stated
the same question as Bill “why isn’t there a forum, mailing lists are
so uncool”.

Personally I think the mailing list is better because it already has an
huge archive of posts. To make the forum useful, one would need to
migrate the list archive into it… unnecessary work IMO.

I don’t know if it’s an official board or not, but there are not many
users registered :stuck_out_tongue:

However, imho, a board is much better than a ML.

hello guys,

i’m wondering why we don’t just use a bbs or a forum istead of this mail list?
'cause, the mail list is too old fashioned and so inconvenient, it is
a big kerfuffle to post here.

if SDL insists on mail list, then google group is a much better
choice. it is free and more powerful.

Hi,

I also prefer mailing list.

I tend to run away from forums. I started
using internet back in 1994. In those days
mailing lists and USENET were the only options
for me. No BBS was available in local call distance.

So I tend to prefer how people talk in mailing lists,
to use mail folders to archive the messages that I
really care. And I keep up to date with what is going
on.

If I have to visit a forum explicitly, I just give up,
since I have to keep on going there to be aware of what
is happening. And I tend to go there only when I have problems.

And I have the feeling the same goes for many people.

Can you guys all take this discussion to whatever web forum you please,
so we can use the mailing list to talk about SDL?

Thanks,

Isn’t it AMD?

I’d agree if there was an official SDL forum, and we can keep with the
mailing list too. There are lots of projects which have both so why this
important one doesn’t? I mean, we’re in the 2007 man, terminal-like BBS are
almost dead… mailing lists can be something really good for some but
forums are also good for others (and I find it rather more user-friendly
than a mailing list… to say something, I haven’t found the "search"
function as of yet =/ since I joined (about some months ago) ). Why to keep
with only one? let’s keep both… sounds like a better idea. Besides, a
forum alongside the mailing list should be seen as an improvement, and not
as a replacement for what it already exists (unless, of course, the owner(s)
(?) want(s) to replace it).On 1/9/07, Paulo Pinto wrote:

Whoever said “BBS” probably meant “web forum”, just to clear that up.

We HAVE a web interface to the mailing list that lets you post at gmane:

http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.sdl

Gmane also lets you use an NNTP client if you prefer usenet, or treat
the mailing list like a web forum or a “blog” if that’s your thing.
Everything from those interfaces, sooner or later, comes through this
mailing list.

So really, this is taken care of already, and in theory everyone should
be happy without anything needing to change.

–ryan.

Looks like there’s only a site-wide search, nothing list-specific.

But… there’s always Google. i.e.:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=wacom+%2Bsite%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.libsdl.org%2Fpipermail%2Fsdl&btnG=Search

And, as mentioned, there’s the Gmane gateway, which has an archive search,
i.e.:

http://search.gmane.org/?query=wacom&group=gmane.comp.lib.sdl

Resources usually cost somebody some money.

Not to start an argument, but I apparently don’t find Web forums very friendly at all.

By dividing up the discussions into two different forums you essentially divide the information. A subject brought up in one forum may not be brought up in another and thus response and available reference is lost in one or the other.
