WIKI discussions?

Hi there.

I have made some additions to the SDL-doc-wiki (mainly spam removals
but also some new material eg. at the Examples page), and have a
question for the list:

Sometimes there are discussions needed about certain subjects. For
example, right now the documentation for the SDL_mutexP / V APIs are
inconsistent, and I am not sure which one is correct (if any). Another
example is the examples page (no pun intended) – I’ve taken the
liberty to restructure it quite drastically to reflect my personal
opinion that there should be more examples of actual SDL code
available in the documentation on a more constructive level than
per-API, which get’s kind of tedious and non-informative IMHO.

I think these sort of things could be sorted out if there would be a
"discussion" page available – either globally maybe the simplest
solution right now – or per wiki-page.

I’ve seen the latter at other wikis, wikipedia.org being the prime
example, but I think the former is also feasible, especially if the
discussion-per-page option isn’t available with the current
wiki-system.

What’s your opinion?

/Olof

ps. Maybe I’ve overlooked something at the Wiki and discussions of
this kind is available – please give me directions where in that
case… ds

Per-page discussion is nice. Really any wiki could easily support this…

All that needs to be done is add a “discuss this page” link into the wiki
header and/or footer.

I guess this is something Bob could do if he approves…?

Thank you for the work you are doing. When you find inconsistent
documentation you should 1) check the code and 2) bring it up for
discussion on the list. Someone knows how it really works.

Another
example is the examples page (no pun intended) – I’ve taken the
liberty to restructure it quite drastically to reflect my personal
opinion that there should be more examples of actual SDL code
available in the documentation on a more constructive level than
per-API, which get’s kind of tedious and non-informative IMHO.

It is easy enough to set up discussion pages on a wiki, just use
CurrentPageNameTalk or something like that as the page name, or you can
use TopicNameTalk so that you can have a topic that is linked into many
pages. The wiki allows you to “subscribe” to a page so that any time it
is changed you get an email telling you about it.

OTOH, why not just bring up the discussion on the list? It directly
relates to SDL, no reason not to have the discussion where everyone can
see it.

I’ve seen the latter at other wikis, wikipedia.org being the prime
example, but I think the former is also feasible, especially if the
discussion-per-page option isn’t available with the current
wiki-system.

What’s your opinion?

Thats my Opinion :-)
