Windows NT4 issues (Gib Bogle) (Steve Lupton)

Very good of you, Steve. Actually this is good news. It means that
the abysmally slow performance I’ve been seeing is strictly a problem of
my current setup. I’m planning to get a new machine soon, and I can’t
wait to see SDL fly the way it should. I’ve asked this a couple of
times with no result, but I’ll try one more time anyway - can anyone
recommend a brand of video card that works well, or brands to avoid? To
make the question a bit simpler, I was thinking of using Nvidia, maybe
one step down from the best card. Does anybody have any experience with
one of these?

Hi.

Not good news I’m afraid. I ran your test program on Windows XP (DX8) and it
ran fine:- (This is after about 5 minutes)

Cycle: 9832 seconds: 0.020000
Cycle: 9833 seconds: 0.020000
Cycle: 9834 seconds: 0.020000
Cycle: 9835 seconds: 0.020000
Cycle: 9836 seconds: 0.020000
Cycle: 9837 seconds: 0.020000
Cycle: 9838 seconds: 0.010000

I guess that means that there is either a problem with SDL when it is using
WINDIB, or there is a problem with your videodriver.

Furthermore, the memory usage remained absolutely constant for the entire
duration of the test. It is therefore unclear why you were seeing excessing
memory usage and swapping.

I don’t have access to a machine running Windows NT4 until 2nd January, but
would be happy to try it again then.

Hi

I couldn’t recomend nVidia more. I have had various nVidia cards over the
past few years and never had a problem.

The Linux 3D performance is also second to none (although some people object
to the lack of open source drivers)

the linux drivers ARE opensource! and the performance under linux is very
good!

also, i can recommand an asus card with gforce 2 mx (take mx400 NOT mx200!!!).

Those provided by nvidia aren’t.–

Weird. Many people say they’re either not open or obfuscated. What’s the
deal? I looked at the code, it seems normal. Could someome clarify? On Fri, Dec 28, 2001 at 12:34:11AM +0100, Stefan C. Ionescu wrote:

People that can’t find something to live for always seem to find something to
die for. The problem is, they usually want the rest of us to die for it too.

The linux drivers you download from Nvidia’s website aren’t
OpenSource. Firstly you get a binary-only X Server to install, and then
you get some source for a kernel module to compile.

And at the top of every source file is the following magic text:

/* _NVRM_COPYRIGHT_BEGIN_On Fri, Dec 28, 2001 at 10:57:57AM +0100, Jakob Kosowski wrote:

Yeah, proprietary sucks, but their cards are quite quick, and their
dual-monitor ones do 3d acceleration on both screens at the same time
(or you can turn one screen off when you want to play Quake III).

It’s probably advisable that any people creating opensource Nvidia
drivers don’t look inside the source for the proprietary ones, what
with the DMCA and all.
