Windows xp and sdl

hi, has anyone had any reports that SDL (or openGL maybe) runs very slowly on windows xp?

hi, has anyone had any reports that SDL (or openGL maybe) runs very

I’m running XP here and it’s working as fast as DirectX is. I’m doing 2D
applications - don’t know if that matters or not. FWIW, Tux Racer runs
quickly and perfectly!

ok, im just asking because i had someone test my app and they said it ran
slow.

If you feel especialy kind today do you think you could test it on your XP?

I heard that the default drivers that shipped with XP are very slow,
but if you install drivers from the vendor your OpenGL speeds right
back up again.

I personnaly don’t have XP anymore (switched to Linux a few weeks ago),
so I can’t test your stuff… but Sam is right on this, the OpenGL
drivers for my graphic card (standard GeForce2) shipping with XP were
extremely slow (I think it was software OpenGL – ie no hardware
acceleration) and knowing Micrsft, I guess they did it on purpose…On Tue, 2002-09-03 at 05:15, Atrix Wolfe wrote:

See you,
-Ga?tan.

I tested it and it is quite fast (the menu screen), i can’t play the game, though.
Because i’m behind a proxy.

Video card drivers for the Geforce series of boards aren’t written by
Microsoft - they are done by NVIDIA. How is this their fault? I get it…
it’s another chance to bash MS.

No, but as I said below:

Tux Racer does. Also, Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force and Quake III (and
those other games that use the Quake 3 engine) all work perfectly. FWIW,
I’m using a TI4600 card with the reference NVIDIA drivers.

the reason you cant play is cause the server wasnt running and the game
itself doesnt quite exist yest hehe…

the client works almost like a web browser, and will accept “scripts” to run
from the server. The intro screens are actualy just scripts which use the
game engine so the game isnt completely unstarted yet, but it has a ways to
go before its playable i think. Im going to have the scripts of course
"compile" into bytecodes, and builds for intel systems will have the option
of having scripts compile to native machine code, so the scripts will be
damn fast and powerful.

Thanx for testing it thouh, I bet ms did that so OpenGL apeared slow while
directx apears fast. Its amazing they are so underhanded but that actualy
fits the pattern of what ive seen in the past. Thanx for testing it for me

I think more specifically the suggestion was that OpenGL support in XP is, for
lack of a better term, crippled, without a vendor patch. It’s not the video
card driver per se.

In this case though, for once, the MS bashing is kind of deserved. MS
removed hardware OpenGL support from the drivers which shipped with Windows
XP. This is because, of course, they want everyone to use DirectX.
OTOH, you can understand that they don’t want to support OpenGL too,
so it DOES make sense. It’s not really the job of the Operating System
to support OpenGL - and I doubt anyone can dispute that (though you
can try!).

It wasn’t a secret though, I’m quite surprised that people have
mentioned it! Anyway, it can all be fixed by downloading the latest
drivers for your video card (which will have the required hardware
support for OpenGL). Which is good advice 99.9% of the time.

Neil.

Well, Neil, MS does offer sooo many opportunities.

So does Linux and the jillions of variants thereof, but it’s not
fashionable to bash them I guess.

Off topic, please, no bashing.
