I struggled with this quite a bit before SDL was released.
I found two sources for X tutorials, neither of wich covered the X
extensions. It just basically covered XCopyArea, XPutImage, etc.
There is a book I purchased quite a while ago, that is fairly good for
Xlib documentation if you can ignore the Motif and OpenWindows crud.
“Professional Graphics in the X Windows System”. Unfortunately, I don’t
have the author handy right now.
Doing a search for xlib tutorial on yahoo should lead you to the same
tutorials I found online.–
