3d modeller for linux

Is there such a thing at this time as a simple 3d polygon modeller
available for linux ?

I asked on a newsgroup and windows only modellers were the only ones
they knew of …

thanks,

I just killed windows off of my computer and im not sticking it back

check out some of the links from the Blue Moon Rendering Tools at

Bother! said Pooh, as he sold Eore to the glue factory.

From where do I get I3d, G3d and K3d? Blender and AC3D are very good, but
you have to pay to get the few features I need (like freakin saving in AC3D,
plugins/scripting in Blender).

Actually plugins are free in blender, and in June all features for
blender will be totally free.

It’s really not all that hard to use just download
ftp://www.blender.nl/pub/chapter-one.pdf.gz
And the latest version of blender sit down with it and in less than
a half hour you’ll be set. It won’t teach you everything but it
covers the basics really well.

If you have any questions about blender feel free to drop me a line.

blender will be completely free sometime soon, but its really not the best for
game modeling…

try the Mops… it exports in RIB format, alot like openGL in syntax…
plus, you can load openGL objects into the modeler…
check it out:

Spruce: the fresh-maker!

Blender is actually the best modelling program I’ve found out there for
Linux. The interface is a bit confusing, but they have a tutorial manual
available for ~$30 that’ll get you going in no time. ALso there’s an
active community ready to help out. Pretty soon it’ll be completely free
(including scripting and plugins).

Hope this helps!–

In an orderly world, there’s always a place for the disorderly.

I would definately recommend using blender www.blender.nl (what I use). It’s
by far the most powerful, but because of this it’s not very ‘simple’.
However, once you get over the learning curve, there is nothing better on
the linux platform for free (Houdini’s out now). Blender also exports a
videoscape3d format which is a very simple format, and easy to incorporate
into games.(much easier and efficient than dxf).________________________________________________________________________

I haven’t been keeping track of blender news for nearly a year now… but
I recall them saying they were moving it towards totally proprietary
(i.e., after a certain version, they were no longer going to allow
downloads from the web-site).

Did they change their minds? Will a full blender be free?

(Honestly, I always liked blender better than the other 3D modellors
because of it’s many features… I was sad when I heard they were going to
stop releasing it freely, so I stopped checking on the website for
updates.)On Wed, 3 May 2000, Kent B Mein wrote:

This is an area where Linux does not excel, largely because for a while it was
so hard to get decent windowed 3D acceleration; hopefully, now that we have
DRI, this will be fixed. Hopefully, the new releases will make it work on my
machine too.

OK: Modellers? Some of the ones I know of are me3D (good, stable, bit hard to
get working), Primal Form (very nice), Pretty Poly (haven’t tried). I keep
threatening to write one but realise that I don’t have time.

I have just downloaded each of the various 3d modelling programs
and they ALL take a lot of tweaking makefiles to compile and when
they do … Segmentation Fault.

seems that they dont like my Xfree86 4 …

I downloaded the mops modeller after Neil recommended it yesterday (It
was the only one I’d never tried before). I must say that I’m fairly
impressed with it. It supports basic objects, CSG, NURBS patches,
extrusions, surfaces of rotation, and some other stuff.

Not to mention, it’s the only one I’ve found that outputs files for use
with BMRT, which is awesome. I don’t recommend trying to compile it,
though. It needs a whole lot of support stuff that the binary has
statically compiled in. You might be better of just downloading the
binary version.

AC3D is very good and well worth the $40. I registered it long ago, lost
my password, so I registered again. It is worth it.

Might want to also check out ``gnemo’’ on SourceForge – it’s an
attempt to mimic the interface of Nendo, which is a nice,
intuitive (for a 3d modeller), quick and easy to learn interface. I
haven’t tried doing anything big with it yet. Of course it’s a work
in progress.

I also tried ac3d and blender – ac3d core dumped on me a bunch, and I
never had/spent the time to really figure out how to use blender,
although it looked good. I’ll have to take another look at it
myself one of these days.

um, I’ve just delurked!

Oh all these 3D modelers, do any mimic very closely the interface of
Lightwave’s modeler? I’ve looked around a lot among commercial
packages, and have found none that I can use with even a 10th the
efficiency… Except for the fact that Lightwave crashes incessantly.
However, I haven’t looked on Linux yet. If I could find a modeler
which copied the essential elements of the Lightwave modeler (the
methods of selection/deselection, layers, and the methods of creating
points and polygons), yet managed to be at least relatively stable, I
would be in heaven.

There must be some problems between gl drivers or something with
these modellers cause ALL of them segfault within 10 seconds of use
