What is it?

What is it?

The inhabitants of the Alha Centauri system… we don’t like 'em. Fotunately
they fit nicely in a blender, thus the term Alphablending… rather a mess
if you forget the lid.

Well…seriously? ok!
Alphablending is when you mix to components (e.g. pixels in an image) using
a fourth component (usual 3 = RGB) as the “mix-factor” usually stored with
the pixels in one of the images. This fourth component is typically used to
represent the transparency (or opacity) of the pixel in question. In this
case the alpha value would be a number that translates into how much the
colour of the source pixel should weigh in the mix of the colours of the two
pixels.
Transparency is not the only application of this technique.
