I think people are missing the point of Sam’s post. ?He is offering a chance
for people in the homebrew community to get an interview at Blizzard.
I don’t think that’s what’s happening.
Read the job listing. This is being posted to the SDL mailing list
(maybe because Sam wouldn’t mind other SDL fans working at Blizzard)
as a courtesy, sure, but Blizzard isn’t looking for a member of “the
homebrew community,” nor an SDL user. This is Sam’s move, and we
appreciate it insofar as it’s nice to have opportunity, but you didn’t
really think this was an open invitation to get an advantage in a
Blizzard interview by virtue of the fact that you found a message on a
mailing list, did you?
Rather than complain about Blizzard, their possible language of choice for
scripting, etc. why not complete a solid demo of whatever makes you excited
and then take that and enjoy the opportunity for an interview with Sam at
Blizzard.
Blizzard describes the experience they require:
* 5+ years of game coding experience on at least one shipped title
* Computer science/mathematics/physics or related degree
* Experience with audio programming
* Experience with multi-threaded programming
* Experience working on networked games
* Experience creating content creation pipeline
Nobody here is being thrown a bone. If you can overcome the absence of
one of these requirements with really stellar talent in another area,
I think that’s beside the fact that Sam advertised this job on the SDL
mailing list.
The worst that could happen is you don’t have the right skills and they
pass. ?The best would be that you get a job at a great company, with a solid
industry reputation, and learn a TON of things working for a professional
game company. ?And even if you don’t get an offer, but have a chance to
interview you get a great opportunity to see the inner working of a game
company which may just fuel your passion to come up with the next killer
game in the downloadable market.
