Considering my own line of work at a rather secretive company that
also gets that kind of wild scrutiny/posturing/guessing from
outsiders, Sam must be finding this rather hilarious.

Oh? Who do you work for, Pierre?

A quick Google search told me that. (Plus, like, click the livejournal
link in Pierre’s sig  )

They probably want someone that can read code, and check if their rules are being implemented correctly. Also, there is a whole bagage of skills that come with that, logic for instance, its often believed that C++ is a difficult language, so what was said about being able to pick up any language later seems correct to me, I started with C++ and college was a breeze in that sense. Programming is about setting rules after all, so it fits perfectly a gameplay creator.
Another point is that the gameplay engineer must be able to talk with the programmers quite deeply about ideas, and understand that kind of mentality.

but big companies make these stupid IT mistakes all the time!

Depends. ?As Joel put it, If it’s a core business function – do it yourself, no matter what.

Cute article. Unfortunately for Joel, picking from existing open
technologies with widely known strengths and a high level of scrutiny
isn’t a process that suffers from any of the problems Joel points out
in his rant :OOn Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 4:04 PM, Mason Wheeler wrote:

I think people are missing the point of Sam’s post. ?He is offering a chance
for people in the homebrew community to get an interview at Blizzard.

I don’t think that’s what’s happening.

Read the job listing. This is being posted to the SDL mailing list
(maybe because Sam wouldn’t mind other SDL fans working at Blizzard)
as a courtesy, sure, but Blizzard isn’t looking for a member of “the
homebrew community,” nor an SDL user. This is Sam’s move, and we
appreciate it insofar as it’s nice to have opportunity, but you didn’t
really think this was an open invitation to get an advantage in a
Blizzard interview by virtue of the fact that you found a message on a
mailing list, did you?

Rather than complain about Blizzard, their possible language of choice for
scripting, etc. why not complete a solid demo of whatever makes you excited
and then take that and enjoy the opportunity for an interview with Sam at
Blizzard.

Blizzard describes the experience they require:

* 5+ years of game coding experience on at least one shipped title
* Computer science/mathematics/physics or related degree
* Experience with audio programming
* Experience with multi-threaded programming
* Experience working on networked games
* Experience creating content creation pipeline

Nobody here is being thrown a bone. If you can overcome the absence of
one of these requirements with really stellar talent in another area,
I think that’s beside the fact that Sam advertised this job on the SDL
mailing list.

The worst that could happen is you don’t have the right skills and they
pass. ?The best would be that you get a job at a great company, with a solid
industry reputation, and learn a TON of things working for a professional
game company. ?And even if you don’t get an offer, but have a chance to
interview you get a great opportunity to see the inner working of a game
company which may just fuel your passion to come up with the next killer
game in the downloadable market.

Some of us can only dream :)On Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 4:52 PM, Ken Rogoway wrote:

No, I don’t think you would have any advantage because you saw this on the
SDL mailing list or had worked with SDL. However, it does make the listing
visible to the SDL community and sometimes you can find very talented people
in the homebrew community or just out of college. And Sam does have a
significant role in the decision making process at Blizzard, especially when
hiring people for his team.

In fact one of the best hires I ever made was someone just out of college.
What made him stand out over and above all the rest was all of the side
projects he had done. In that sense having worked on a homebrew game (with
or without SDL) is a plus over candidates that haven’t done anything yet and
just have a college degree.

I realize most people won’t qualify for these jobs. I wasn’t trying to
start another thread about it arguing one way or another, in fact just the
opposite.

And to a point on an earlier response, yes it is useful to discuss the ins
and outs of internally developed scripting languages or using existing ones.
I didn’t intend my response to indicate otherwise.

Someone in Comp Sci with me in college made fun of me one day:
"man, Bill, you just sit and write games all the time."
Yeah, well, Atari Games offered me a job right before I graduated – the
guy found my X-Window clone of Missile Command (in 3D vector  )

I declined, to live with my now-wife, but eventually got caught up doing
mobile games, because I was at the Vintage Computer Festival, showing off
Ataris, and some of my Atari-inspired games I wrote for Linux (in SDL  )

So yeah, if you want a job doing it, you had better love it.

The most “qualified” people I’ve met are usually a lot dumber than the
least qualified ones I’ve met. (Although the former seem more diligent
than the latter, in general anyhow.)On Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 8:08 PM, Ken Rogoway wrote:

I second that! And I should add: It also KILLS creativity, which in the games biz is just THE MOST important personality trait you must have… specially for a company like blizzard which asks in ALL their job postings: “A passion for games”. I almost lost it because of college, and Im still having a hard time recovering it (mostly the passion, the creativity is here, though not as it will be when the passion returns  thats why Im saying this, they are one and the same in most aspects)

Cheers!
