A quick followup: sawmill has an option under customize/focus “give
focus to windows even if they haven’t asked for it”. If that is
checked then it works; if not, then it fails. Perhaps sdl or gemdrop
doesn’t officially request the focus from the wm… This works as a
work around, but I will let you know what happens with the new version
of libsdl.
Thanks for your response and work on debian.

Definitely the brand new CVS - it should work on sawmill.
Thanks!

Hi Bill,
Sam Langtinga, SDL creator, replies regarding sawmill…
You mean, he will reply?
Yep!
Can you also ask him about mixer? He wanted to change the name “somewhen
next week”, that was two weeks ago
SDL1.0 is now in debian, I’d like to package mixer (tried with the currently
available one, gemdropx works nicely with that package but I want the
name change of the library to happen first.
Well, I’m Ccing this to the SDL mailing list.
Sam? Any word on the library name changes?
