Continuing to need a Mac OS X developer to maintain Tux Paint (OS X 10.11 El Capitan problems)

Tux Paint has needed some extra hands to help maintain the
OS X specific code (not that there’s very much), and to
help build releases.

The latest OS X build was from months before the latest
release was officially posted, so it’s basically a beta –
and THAT was over a year ago! (It was produced by a
developer who was being paid a bounty by a 3rd party who
wanted to get Tux Paint working on OS X 10.9.)

We’re in a similar problem to the 10.9 issue, in that now
I’m receiving reports/complaints about Tux Paint not working
once people upgrade to El Capitan.

See: http://sourceforge.net/p/tuxpaint/bugs/206/

So, I’m once again* reaching out into the void to see if anyone out
there is able & willing to volunteer for the project
(it’s licensed GPLv2; see: http://www.tuxpaint.org/ )

Thanks in advance!

  • I swear, this has is like pulling teeth :^/ No programmers
use Macs any more? Mac folks don’t have time/inclination to
volunteer? They have a thing against children? What? ;^)–

I have a mac but to be honest el capitan is such a major pain I actually
shrunk the size of my mac partition to about 100gb because I might need
xcode sometime in the future but I rarely go there anymore. I mainly use
vanilla Debian as it has everything that I need and it just works.

Apple has been making a lot of short sighted decisions that I believe will
hurt them when their massive profits start to dry up.

I can’t promise anything today but I’ll look at it this weekend and see if
I can provide any help.

Well, another report has come in from someone trying to use
the latest Mac OS X build of “Tux Paint” on Apple’s new
Mac OS X 10.11 ‘El Capitan’, and getting CRAZY skewed graphics,
which seems like it would be an issue at the SDL / video driver
level. :^/

Once again, I’m reaching out to see if anyone here can lend
a hand. (In the meantime, I’ve asked the latest person to go
add his details & screenshots to the bug report, mentioned in
my email below, from -yikes- 4 months ago… time flies ;^( )

Thanks in advance!

I saw that report too but I have an old G4 that unfortunately only supports
up to OS 9.2.
I don’t think a VM can give accurate results, so I looked on ebay for a mac
mini
and hope I can get one cheap, but no promises. On Tue, Apr 12, 2016 at 5:43 AM, Bill Kendrick wrote:

Hi there,

Although I am not able to offer any programming help at this time, I did
notice something that may help indicate where the problem may be:

MacBook Air (2011 model, stock, with the Intel HD 3000 chipset)
Mac OS X 10.11.4

After a minute of showing that and nothing more, I terminated the app.

Hackintosh build (2015, NVIDIA GeForce GT 740)
Mac OS X 10.11.3

No problems whatsoever. I wonder if the problem could be video related?

Other thoughts: What version of SDL1 is TuxPaint built against? I notice
a number of changes, some of which affect the video subsystem, on the
latest tip of the SDL1 branch. Worth a shot to anybody that volunteers
for this.

I wish you luck!

Cheers,

I honestly don’t know, off-hand. Is it something that someone with
a Mac can figure out easily? Can someone out here do that for me?
(I have a Mac Mini that I assume has no way of running recent OS X;
I believe Ryan G. gave it to me back in the day (thanks!))

The current OS X build of the latest Tux Paint was produced in
November 2013, about 9 months before the final version of 0.9.22 was
officially released. It was done by a developer who was being paid
by a school(?) to get Tux Paint working on OS X 10.9. Once he was done
and got paid, he stopped working on it.

So now it’s coming up on 2 years since the official release, and no one
has actually tried building it for OS X, that I know of.
(Source tarball: http://tuxpaint.org/download/source/)

This issue of skewed graphics definitely seems to be an issue at a
lower level. Nothing in Tux Paint’s own code should be causing it
(e.g., on the title screen – just loads a PNG and blits it all at
once; nothing funny going on). I don’t see similar reports from
users using earlier versions of OS X (10.9, 10.10).

I’m now getting reports of elementary schools which have begun upgrading
to OS X 10.11, and they’re going to be stuck in a situation where they
can’t even use Tux Paint anymore, if a corrected version isn’t released.
So it’s at the “won’t someone think of the children” level. ;-(

It’s fall in the northern hemisphere, and school is back in session.
Over the summer, it seems many school’s IT depts updated their
Macs to newer versions of OS X (e.g., El Capitan), and I’m getting
another rash of complaints about Tux Paint not working right.

Nothing about Tux Paint changed, but apparently we need to fix
something. I’m still in search of someone who can step in and
join the project (it’s open source, GPL’d, and loosely/informally
organized) as the Mac OS X (or I guess now “macOS”?) maintainer.

This would involve tasks like:

  • figuring out WTF changed in 10.11 that’s causing TP to be unusable
    (https://sourceforge.net/p/tuxpaint/bugs/206/)

  • building and testing, based on what’s in CVS (or I guess we’re
moving to a git repo these days?)

  • potentially helping with the libSDL 1.2 -> 2.x migration

  • building and testing, based on beta releases (source tarballs)

  • building, based on final official releases (source tarballs, again),
which I’ll then post to the project’s file hosting, and announce!

See below for lots of frustrating context.

BTW, if anyone has an ego about Macs being so great, etc. etc.,
you may be interested to know Tux Paint builds and works fine on
Windows 95 through Windows 10, and packages are maintained as part
of Debian and Ubuntu Linux. Come prove how great Macs are by
getting Tux Paint to run on them, too!
