Drawing select parts of a bg

Hello,

I am sure this has been discussed here, but could someone explain it to me? I
am a newb programmer and game programmer for that matter… I notice heavy cpu
use by blitting my background image every loop. My question is, how do I go
about drawing only a part of the BG, being the part that had been drawn over
by a cube for example? Some sample code would help as I am a newb and it is
hard for me to come up with it by myself…

Thank for any help–
