Event: Adam Rippon of Muteki Corp ("Dragon Fantasy") speaking about libSDL at the Linux Users' Group of Davis, CA (May 19th)

Hey all! Spent a few years lurking & ignoring this mailing list
(sorry!), but still plugging away at Tux Paint (still based on libSDL 1.2,
but will eventually port to 2.0 now that it’s finally out  )

Anyway, for the folks out here who are in northern California, I wanted
to mention that the Linux User Group I help run is hosting a talk by
Adam Rippon, the creative director at Muteki Corp, publishers of
the “Dragon Fantasy” retro-styled JRPG series. (DF was originally released
for iOS, then ported to Windows, Mac, Android, PS3 & Vita.
DF2 was a Sony exclusive for PS3 & Vita, but is being ported to libSDL 2.0,
with plans to release on more platforms.)

It’ll be on Monday, May 19th (about a week away!) from 7pm to 9pm
at the public library in Davis, California. (Just 20min west of Sacramento,
and about 1-2 hours northeast from most of the SF Bay Area.)

Details are here: http://lugod.org/meeting/

I also put up a Facebook event you can join (and share with your friends!)

Fun fact: I put Adam & Sam Lantinga in touch via a group chat on Facebook,
and after introducing them, I wanted off to go shopping. Since I was part
of the group chat, my phone was dinging the whole time, and I got to spy on
the magic as it happened.

Take care!–

Looks like interesting entertainment fun, California wise

Would it be possible to enjoy of it online?

Take Care

Any chance to be recorded for people outside US ?

Thanks,

I’ll ask if anyone can come record it. We don’t normally have someone
who comes to do that, though we do post whatever slides our guest
speakers provide, as well as some photos of events. Full video recording
has only happened once or twice in the club’s 15 year history.

Maybe it can be 3 times? I’d really like to see it as well. :)On Tue, May 13, 2014 at 10:19 AM, Bill Kendrick wrote:

Looks like it might get recorded. Cross your fingers!

(Did you all know, Sam went to school out here in Davis, and was one
of our guest speakers (when he was at Loki) back in 1999!?
Sadly, no photos were taken.)

Advice In Time: audio quality is more important than video on speech casts

Ryan does his share, maybe it’d be interesting for Sam to show up, idea:
state, flow & future of SDL

Wellll… sadly, the audio didn’t come out so good. One of our members
volunteered to record it, and I asked him to be sure he was close enough
to pick up the audio, and he said he was. Anyway, crank the volume up
and put on some headphones. Adam didn’t have any slides, but we had an
excellent chat.

Skip the first 15 minutes. I didn’t expect that part of the meeting
(introductions, news, due collection, etc. ) to be recorded.
Also, I need to loose some weight.

Awesome! Yeah, great tip on the headphones. Thumbs Up California LUG! Is
awesome how talks can be more attended by the people who cares nowadays

Great video, thanks for sharing!

One comment about what’s said around the 49m mark, about Android files and
the need to extract everything from the APK. SDL’s RWops has support to
read files from APKs directly, and the usage model is quite similar to
fopen/read/close/etc

I believe the problem he stated was that there was 3rd party code
(libraries) that happily
call fopen/read/write, and rather than fixing up every single one of them,
it was easier to
just unzip everything.

Yeah, the Android Package API for assets is just not deserving Linux I/O,
he he. They could at least mount it virtually, and read-only if they care
about the Package pristinity. Man, Linux allows all kinds of loop mounts.
I’m sure the’ll come to this problem at some point.

Needless to say Android Storage is one of the worst right now. Phones
getting low on disk space all over the world. Cause of inefficiencies,
duplicates, cache & userspace app usage. Seems to assume its unlimited. I
guess they don’t have that issues with their Storage Farms, ;-D.

Could be worthy a research on c i/o LD_PRELOAD, say with RWOps, ;-).
