That’s right, we’re back again for Google Summer of Code 2010!
Thanks to Google and the great students we’ve had, we’re going around
for another year!
The Google Summer of Code is a program in which students from all over
the world are invited to apply to help out open source projects over
the summer for a significant stipend. Even if you’re not interested
in helping out SDL, there are lots of great projects to choose from!
Because we’ve had applicants with widely varying skill levels, this
year I’m asking all prospective applicants to submit a sample patch
for SDL 1.3. It doesn’t have to be big or even accepted, but it does
have to show familiarity with the development process and good coding
practices.
Hello! This is great news.
That could be an opportunity to fix the fullscreen mode on GNU/Linux.
See my three emails on the SDL development list on 2010-01-13:
[SDL] Redimension OpenGL rendering area in SDL_FULLSCREEN
[SDL] Access mouse in fullscreen on X11?
[SDL] Fullscreen in only one display using TwinView on Linux?
I think it is nice when a free software works well on platforms that are
free software as well.
Best regards,
Alexandre

Great! I’m looking forward to a patch sample and your application! :)On Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 7:27 AM, Alexandre Quessy wrote:

It sure does, thanks! What approach do you have in mind at the
moment? (Feel free to reply to me directly if you would like to take

I’m very much interested in adding International Input for Windows to SDL
for my GSoC project.
I’ve been researching it the past week or so.

Of course I am way too old for the summer of cold.
I have 17 years of programming experience .
But as you know I am very interested in an iphone port.
If any of your student entries are doing anything with the iphone port, I would like to offer my services as a place they can come to for questions or help.
If you so wish please feel free to give my name and email to any of these groups.
Also Ichat is very much possible.
I have been involved with intern projects in the past, I think its a great way for students to get a feel for real world application development, (life cycles, schedules etc), also I think the industry as a whole gains.

Great! If we get any students working on iPhone stuff, I’ll
definitely have you as a mentor.
Cheers! On Sat, Mar 27, 2010 at 10:01 AM, michelleC wrote:

This is wonderful I think SDL is great, I’ve been working with it since about a year in two opensource projects, and this is a great chance for learning more about it and helping its developement.
I’m really looking forward gsoc, I’d like to take the “Desktop Integration” idea as a project. I have some experience working with desktop features in Windows, and now I’m researching how they work in Linux.
Google’s Android OS is seeing wider use now, and that use is just going to get wider – maybe wider than Apple’s iPhone, if that’s not already the case.
I really think an Android port for SDL 1.3 should be made a priority for this GSoC.------------------------

Although I’m aiming for shareware games using 3D acceleration to various
extent these days, with accelerated OpenGL ES, nicer screens and stuff coming
along now, one cannot disregard these devices, and in particular Android, as a
potential “bonus” target platform. On Saturday 03 April 2010, at 01.05.43, “Nathaniel J Fries” wrote:
