Just an Idea

I’m just thinking out loud here, but would anyone be willing to help port
NetHack to SDL. Most of the native ports of NetHack (console) would be able
to run graphically on their host OS. Linux->SDL, Mac->SDL, Windows->SDL,
Unix->SDL, Amiga!!!->SDL, etc. In my opinion SDL would be a perfect add-in
to an already great game. Comments? Suggestions? Flames?

Would anyone be willing to play it? I have tried various graphic front-ends
to NH, but they always seem way inferior to the standard tty interface.
Go ahead if you wish, but I feel that people who make these kinds of
additions have missed the very soul of the game.

It might be an interesting programming exercise, but ask yourself what it
would offer that the existing interfaces don’t. Just porting stuff to
SDL is rarely a useful goal in itself.

If you want a considerably more worthwhile task, try to track down
Thomas Boyd’s Ragnarok — a very nice roguelike game that was
written with graphics from the start, not as an afterthought. The
source to Ragnarok was never released, only a binary which ran under
DOS for VGA framebuffers, so this is a terrific opportunity to save a
good game from getting lost in time. Ask him nicely to release the
source, and do an SDL port of that.

Ragnarok eh… That was a really nice game if I remember. Well thought
out.

Rogue is like a turn based Gauntlet. That would be pretty kewl too!

The latest versions of Nethack already have graphical clients, so
perhaps just porting them to SDL would be a good idea? No need to
rewrite too much…

Sean Etc.

Well, if I were to be porting a roguelike game to SDL, maybe I would do
Angband. Development hasn’t happened there since I was in third year
college, I believe, but that’s just my two cents…On Wed, 23 Aug 2000, Ryan Phillips wrote:

I believe they released a new version of Angband, didn’t they?

New versions of ZAngband and PAngband have also just come
out. (ZAngband is my favorite, and the only one I’ve ever hacked on).> On Wed, 23 Aug 2000, Ryan Phillips wrote:

Really? If so, there’s no announcement on the official site
(http://www.phial.com/~benh/angband). The news there was last updated two
years ago apparently… (correction; not when I was in second year
college, when I was in fourth year college). On 24 Aug 2000, Sean Middleditch wrote:
