Newbie: Can a SDL_surface (window) have an irregular Shape?

If I want to create e.g. a graphical control panel
using SDL can I use a bitmap with transparent color so
that the window has the shape of the bitmap? If yes,
how can I do that?

Btw, how can I post in gmane.comp.lib.sdl? I have
setup my Opera for news.gmane.org. I can read it. But
when I send message out I can’t see it and no error
return.

I did this on Windows a looong time ago, and I’m not sure if X supports
it. If you’re dead set on having a shaped window (shaping your window
isn’t exactly a /functional/ improvement now is it?) then you can
google for something like “windows api shaped window” and I’m sure
