Hello all,
i started with some OpenGL stuff with SDL (Win32 only now). Now i time
to update my Linux and do some porting. What is the current state of
the NVIDIA triver for Linux?
Is it acclerated in the new XFree86 4.0?
And SDL is more fun than any Directx or 3D engine i used before.–
Best regards,

Only works with XF 4.0 and is known to run Quake 3 and Unreal
Tournament. There are still some minor stability issues but people told
me that the visual quality is on pair with the Windows drivers. For
Quake 3 it is said that the performance is as good as the Windows
pendand.
One issue people reported is that resolution changes didn’t work with
Unreal Tournanement (using SDL).–

Hmm? Do you use the new binary only drivers from NVIDIA released a few
days ago? You don’t need anything from Utah-GLX if you use the NVIDIA
drivers.–

Hi Dave
Uhm… I have an Nvidia card and it is by no means an par with the windows
drivers from XF4.0. You need to get other driver from UTAH GLX to even
have anything reasonable in the way of performance to run Quake 3 and
Unreal tornament. I have yet to see anything decent come out of these
drivers but then again I haven’t tried UTAH-GLX yet…
NVidia has just released new binary drivers using direct rendering with
kernel module and a GLX module. According to benchmarks at
linuxgames.com it is VERY much an par with the Windows drivers with
Quake III running 100+ fps under XF4
Look at the benchmarks at linuxgames.com and download drivers at
nvidia.com

This is a known problem with SDL. They are trying to figure it out,
according to the mailing list, but not too quickly.

How is this a problem with SDL? Who is working on it?
I hadn’t heard this.

Ah yes, now I remember - XF 4.0 and VidMode extension.> On Wed, 26 Apr 2000, Daniel Vogel wrote:

I just saw the beta release thing on slashdot. I like XFree 4.0 but my
X font server doesn’t like XFree 4.0. Doesn’t that new driver need a
kernel module to run?
Isn’t that a little weird?

Well, not really. The kernel module synchronizes access to the graphics hardware
and makes the agp bus’s advanced features available. It does several other things
as well. As to your font server - I’m happily running x4 without a single font server.
X4 has several font backends that workd just fine for type1, ttf and all the other
formats.> On Wed, 26 Apr 2000, Daniel Vogel wrote:

No kidding (with utah glx) so go and get the new drivers which are
*WAY BETTER

If you add the fontpaths direct into the XF86config file then add
xtt or freetype into the load section for modules then it will do the
truetype fonts or any others automatic - no font server required

I have some major flicker with the new GL libraries from NVIDIA. HUGE
speed increase though… WOW!!!
Anyone got a solution for that?

For the huge speed increase? Ya run netscape alot, that should slow it back
down to the way it was before.

Do you ask for double buffered rendering context ?
Franck.
Sorry for OT, (there are some people using X 4)
How to use 2 mice in XFree86 4?
I have
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "PS2"
Driver "mouse"
Option “Protocol” "MouseManPlusPS/2"
Option “Device” "/dev/psaux"
EndSection
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Serial"
Driver "mouse"
Option “Protocol” "Intellimouse"
Option “Device” "/dev/ttyS1"
EndSection
InputDevice "PS2" "CorePointer"
InputDevice “Serial” “CorePointer”
InputDevice “Serial” “SendCoreEvents”
InputDevice “Serial”
InputDevice "Keyboard1" "CoreKeyboard"
If I uncomment any of the “Serial” X crashes when I move my serial mouse.
It worked with X 3.3.x.
And how to make my wheel to work?

It isn’t my program doing it. It is from the opengl screensavers. I
tried not loading the double buffering and keeping them loaded. Both ways
produce a great deal of flicker…
