OpenGL won't work, "Couldn't set GL mode:"

OpenGL won’t work, whenever I run testgl it says “Couldn’t set GL
mode:” and when I try to set it in ZSNES it freezes for 10 seconds and
goes back to the old mode. gltron compiled but crashes my system when
I run it. heroes works just fine. I’m not sure what video card I’ve
got. I think it’s a nVidia card. I noticed in the code for testgl that
it’s supposed to print a reason for the error after “Couldn’t set GL
mode:” but it doesn’t. I’m using slackware linux. Any ideas?

First, the below is what we see when you use HTML mail, correct that and people

First and foremost you need to identify your video card. If it is a
nvidia, goto nvidia’s website and grab the latest kernel and GLX drivers.

The FAQ/README on that site has more than enough info to get you going.

Two things:

  • Instead of griping about HTML mail (it will never die folks, no use
complaining about it), you can opt to fix your broken MUA. It looks like
you’re using Mutt, so you can add this to your .mailcap:
    text/html; lynx -force_html %s; needsterminal;
    And/or this to your .muttrc:
    auto_view text/html

  • Every problem he listed was exhibited by a SDL application, including
ZSNES, so yeah, he’s on the right list, but it may be the standard “my
nvidia card doesn’t do OpenGL right” FAQ. I don’t know if ZSNES uses
OpenGL (I don’t see why it would), so it may not be so easy to diagnose
    ;).

Zsnes uses OpenGL, indeed. It uses it for h/w scaling.
