Opening SDL 1.3 Visual C 2005 project?

I just downloaded the SDL 1.3 “snapshot” (since I couldn’t get Mercurial to work). Tried to open the Visual C 2005 project, using Visual C 2005 Express edition, and I get this error:--------------

The following error has occurred during XML parsing:

File: C:\Documents and Settings\Vern\Desktop\SDL-1.3\SDL-1.3.0-4904\VisualC\SDL\SDL_VS2005.vcproj
Line: 4
Column: 1
Error Message:
A name was started with an invalid character.

The file ‘C:\Documents and Settings\Vern\Desktop\SDL-1.3\SDL-1.3.0-4904\VisualC\SDL\SDL_VS2005.vcproj’ has failed to load.

I’m a Mac person… don’t know much about Windows. Any idea why this won’t open? The dialog box appears twice, and then nothing opens.

Then another dialog comes up basically saying “The application for this project is not installed.”

Any ideas? This is under Windows XP, I believe service pack 2.

Secondly, I can’t check out the latest SDL 1.3 release from Mercurial, because when I type “hg clone http://hg.libsdl.org/SDL” into cmd.exe, I get a crashed dialog that says:

“Scalable distributed SCM has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”

Error report contains:

ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 000025fb
