[OT] Getting free graphics/sounds

Hi list,

sorry this message is off-topic, but I didn’t know where else to ask.

I’m developing a computer game (GPL) which uses SDL. It uses some static
graphics (like floor tiles) and some sprites. The question now is: where
can I get some decent, free graphics, which I could change as needed and
distribute with my GPL game? Same question applies to decent sounds.
Most which can be found on the internet is total crap.

I’m primarily looking for little pictures of tanks, jeeps, helicopters
and sprites of explosions (PNG with alpha-channes would be awesome).
Does anybody know a source?

Currently, I’ve “drawn” those myself… I’m much more of a programmer
than I’m an artist. Needless to say, everything I did looks ridiculously
crappy.

Any help appreciated,
Thanks in advance,
Johannes

You know, sometimes it’s good to just take a break and have some fun with
the GIMP  Try the new 2.4 release www.gimp.org maybe you are better than
you think?

Hi,

There are good sounds at http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/index.php , all
under Creative Commons Sampling Plus 1.0 license, which means you can
use them freely in your game (see the legal page
http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/legal.php).

Well, Robin - just fair. Time to drop my pants:

This is the tank I “drew” after about an hour. Notice that I am indeed
able to use the Gimp (this is where the nice camo effect comes from and
why the turret has the nice shade). However, it still looks like crap.

Please also note that I know tanks aren’t blue. But it’s a tank of the
blue team, therefore. Others look identical, except for the color (as I
said, using the Gimp is not the problem).

I’m just a total shipwreck when it comes to arts. So, any help still
appreciated…

Greetings,
Johannes

Thanks a lot, this sure helps me out on the sound side! Now if there
were just something alike with graphics, I’d be amazed.

If you’re looking for tiles and background kind of stuffs… find some
free-to-use textures used in different game add ons.
Doom/Heretic/Hexen WADS, quake, quake2, halflife textures, etc.

Just as a heads up, be very careful when grabbing textures from these
sources… alot of the wad/level community don’t particularly care
about the sources of their textures… ie: it’s common for add on
textures/levels to use graphics from another commercial game… and
given that the level is being distributed for free, they are somewhat
’under the radar’ from legal reprise. But you should at least do a
bit of due diligence to verify that the sources of the graphics
weren’t ‘borrowed’ from another commercial source.

There are also plenty of free ‘textures’ places on the net for use in
3d programs and the like…

For sprites, euhhhh good luck :). You might be able to find some
games in the public domain and be able to rip off their sprites and do
a tiny bit of modification to them to make them your own… but…
that’s boo hiss. I’d suggest doing some basic sprites to get things
moving forward, then hang out on some #gfx like irc channels and other
places where ppl produce art… and see if someone will do art for
your game in trade for being in the credits. Starving artists are like
starving coders… if they’re bad enough off, they’ll do some work to
help their portfolio

In a game I released, all the graphics were drawn by an acquaintance
using povray, and he released them into the public domain. The images
are mostly 48x48 in size, so they’re probably too small for your
needs. But it also includes a couple of explosion animations (12
frames long), contained in a 144x144 square. You can download the
images without the rest of the game at this URL:
http://www.muppetlabs.com/~breadbox/pub/software/tworld/tiles-48x48-24bpp.tar.gz
(500k download) The images are all inside of atiles.bmp, and use
magenta as a transparent color-key.

Hi
Two places to get graphics from, one i found quite useful if your into
fantasy/strategy isometric games
http://reinerstileset.4players.de/englisch.htm all original and all free,

Previously published games

http://www.purezc.com/index.php?page=tilesets Zelda graphics and this one
has a lot of graphics from big name games
http://www.gsarchives.net/index2.php , but even if you don’t want to use
graphics from a previously published game, they will help you get your ideas
developed as they can always be changed later, and or they will show you how
the pros did it back in the day.

And for those doing 3d or just want nice textures (which can be cut up into
tiles)

Just do a search on google “free textures”

Hope this helps , and yes i know that’s more than two

Sometimes is easier and faster to make a 3D model in a program like Blender
and take as many shots of it as you need. If you don’t really like
the “realism” of this method, you can use the cartoon rendering style in
order to get a smaller number of colours and a thicker outline. I have done
complete character animations this way.

I’m not much of an artist either. I’ve had difficulty in using 3D modeling programs after several tries so I gave that up. What works for me, mostly because of the programming side of my nature, is POV Ray (www.pov-ray.org) which allows you to create some very nice (nearly) photo-realistic images. It relies on a bit of understanding of geometry and can get as complex as you can bear or as simple as you like.
