I was just wondering if anyone has played with this,
and/or if there is any more information on this port
on the web. Can the PS2 binary be compiled with GCC
for the mips processor? Is there a boot image
necessary to burn on the CD (PS2 branding)? Can I burn
the image on a regular CD-ROM? As you can tell I am
REALLY in the dark on this and would like more
information.
Thanks,

I know all that stuff, but that kit only works
with japanese versions of PS2.
Unless you erroneously think that the PS2 dev kit is the same as the PS2
Linux kit, then you’re still off. It’s a port to the PS2 Linux kit, not
the PS2 dev kit. I understand the PS2 dev kit as the kit distributed by
Sony and SN Systems to licensed PS2 developers. The PS2 Linux kit is a
consumer-level product. The SDL port isn’t native, so it does you no good
if you only have the PS2 dev kit and no Linux port.
I live in europe, so my suggestion is the only one.
Unless you want to crack the PS2 hardware to make it
read CDRs.
No, you’d still be out of luck. There is no way to boot CDRs without
using a swap method or modchip + swap method. And there is no way to use
the SDL port unless you have ps2linux.
and register for a ps2linux kit to your continent.–

No, I don’t think that, in fact there are three kinds
of PS2, but that is OT.
What isn’t OT is that the original question was if the PS2 support in SDL
could be used natively on the PS2. Note:

The answer to this question is no, especially if you suggest that he uses
the devkit, which won’t work unless he has a Linux port for the PS2, which
is only available on a consumer level in the Japanese-only PS2 Linux kit,
which is not what you suggested. Do you understand now? Your answer was
wrong, plain and simple. SDL does not work with the native PS2 devkit
licensed to 3rd-party PS2 developers. Read the code.
OK, so I was mistaken. Should pay better attention
next time.
No need to continue this thread any longer.–

no doubt those sdl ps2linux libs are heavily tied to X and mesa, while
they do run on ps2linux they would not run on a ‘normal’ ps2 from what I
can understand.
There is a mailing list and archive on that site ps2dev.sourceforge.net
maybe you can find some answers there.

The SDL ps2linux support is based off of a ‘gscon’ device, a hacked up
console (not framebuffer) for the Graphics Synthesizer. It isn’t any
more tied to X or mesa than the standard SDL Linux framebuffer support.
It only works with the Japanese-only ps2linux kit distributed by Sony.

ps2dev. and ps2hacking.sourceforge.net are geared for those who want to do
native, homebrew development, there is no help for SDL there as there is no
native support for the PS2 in SDL. However, there are the beginnings of a
Linux 2.4.x port to the PS2, outside of Sony (at ps2hacking.sourceforge.net).
Hmm, I feel like I’m repeating myself, I’m CC’ing Cameron to this in case he
isn’t subscribed to the list.
