SDL_Image & .xcf files, does it work?

loading of .xcf ( GIMP ) files does not work

I’ve created in gimp sample .xcf files
one layer file and the other multilayer
( 3 layers, 2 are 50% transparent )

after executing
#showimage one_layer.xcf

I see… beautiful checker ( not original image ).
it looks like layer is 100% transparent
( which of course is not in GIMP )

and
#showimage multilayer.xcf
I see sometimes black screen
and sometimes even segfault messages

does someone tested .xcf files with success?
maybe i’m doing something wrong?----------------------------------------------------

Huh, I didn’t even know SDL_image claimed to support XCF until just now.
However, the docs say:

XCF
GIMP native (.xcf) (XCF = eXperimental Computing Facility?)

This format is always changing, and since there's no library
supplied by the GIMP project to load XCF, the loader may frequently
fail to load much of any image from an XCF file. It's better to load
this in GIMP and convert to a better supported image format.

So I suppose I’m not surprised to hear it’s not working. :^)
(GIMP folks haven’t made a libxcf for everyone else to use? Shame shame  )

I’ve seen that there is effort being made for a specification for the file
format. This still leaves a gap between an easily sharable implementation, but
it is a start.

If the GIMP stored a pre-composited raster image in each file using a
common format, it would make it quite easy for other applications to
load the image, and would also accelerate the speed with which the
gimp could show previews from its open dialog, and potentially the
loading of the image for editing. Someone should give this suggestion
to the GIMP team. However I’d say in general distributing software
with multimedia in XCF format — when all you need out of your images
are a flat raster image — is a dumb idea.

I’d like to be able to save a file under two file names (and file
formats) from the GIMP. Basically if my files could auto-export that
would be great. On 10/5/06, Pete Shinners wrote:

The XCF format is intended as a format that changes with each release of
GIMP to accomodate new features of the software. It is not supposed to
be an exchange format.
