SDLimage: incompatible libJPEG versions 6.1 <-> 6.2?

Hi,

I’m compiling ASC (the project I’m working on and which uses SDLimage),
with SuSE Linux 6.3, which has libjpeg 6.1
Recently several users told me that the precompiled binaries don’t work
on their system, because they have libjpeg 6.2, and those libraries are
incompatible.
“Wrong JPEG library version: library is 62, caller expects 61”

Does anybody know what’s its all about? The Independant Jpeg Group
(www.ijg.org) hasn’t updated the jpeg library for more than two years.
Or where does libJPEG come from, if not from the ijg? It’s clearly
based on the ijg code.
So what’s the difference between 6.1 and 6.2, and why do newer
distributions not install both versions if they are incompatible?

Wondering…
