Here’s a little command by Johnathan Nightingale, patched for X by Caol?n
McNamara:

It beeps using the console ioctls whenever possible, and falls back to X if
you’re running “under” X and aren’t root. (Only root can beep if not owning a
console - and you don’t own a console as an X application.)
Other Win32 APIs than MessageBeep(), anyone? How about Mac? (Do they have
anything like the speaker, or do they always have “real” audio hardware?)
