Subject line contains but there's X-Been-There header as well

Heyas,
Originally this email was going to ask whether SDL had considered using
the X-Mailing-List header, but I decided I first best look at the
existing headers. Lo and behold, there’s an X-Been-There. So why the
[SDL] in the Subject field? Surely that’s adding (admittedly
insignificant) extra processing, as well as wasting space and telling me
stuff I can find elsewhere within the mail. Personally I prefer
X-Mailing-List as I think it’s more obvious, and matches nicely with (at
least) Linux ACPI list, amongst other’s I’m subscribed to - but to each
their own, I guess.

Yes, I’m a lurker - of many mail lists so don’t take it personally. I’ve
finally decided to look at setting up a real rule here to move the SDL
mail into it’s correct folder for me. Hence I’m on my high-horde again

Regards,

Me.

Horse. Genuine typo, I swear - look at your keys! If it weren’t for a
certain rather silly game, my spell-check probably wouldn’t have
accepted this!

Luv,

Me.

I wouldn’t agree on the removal of the [SDL] prefix in the subject
field, because (as far as I know) Gmail has no way of filtering mail
according to headers.On Dec 14, 2007 6:58 PM, Peter Lawler <libsdl.org at bleeter.id.au> wrote:

It doesn’t support punctuation either, so it was mis-filtering a lot of my
stuff when I was filtering on [SDL] in the subject. I have to filter on

Just remembered that I do the same (ie. filter on the To field).

So I take back what I said about removing the [SDL] prefix. In fact I agree. On Dec 19, 2007 2:55 PM, Gregory Smith wrote:

I don’t filter my inbox and I find it quite useful to have [SDL], so I
can quickly identify what’s the mail is about and see if I should read
it. It doesn’t hurt letting it stay so I disagree with removing it.On Wed, Dec 19, 2007 at 03:16:09PM -0500, Simon Roby wrote:

Hi, just my opinion, but I always thought that the list indicator (in
this case the “[SDL]”) in the subject field is for the people, not
the software. I have several lists going to the same inbox, and I like
to scan quickly (with my eyes) to see what lists have mail. The fact
that some software lets you do sorting and filtering on the subject
line is a convenience.
