Symbian.zip

Hello,

the symbian.zip archive contains files containing “Copyright ©
1998-2005 Symbian Software Ltd. All rights
reserved.”(symbian/sdlexe_pointer.mbg and symbian/sdlexe.mbg).

Is Symbian allowing to redistribute the files with this copyright? They
are not covered under the normal SDL license.

Thomas

Good catch, I hadn’t noticed that. I suspect not, but I’ll contact the author.

Thanks! On Fri, Jan 8, 2010 at 9:41 AM, Thomas Woerner wrote:

I think that comment is saying that BitmapCompiler (the
header-generating tool) is under that copyright, not the header itself.

I think it’s no problem.

Strictly speaking, that is the only clue to the licensing of those
files. Even if it were the license to BitmapCompiler and not to those
files, you do not have permission to redistribute them, unless given
elsewhere by Symbian.

files.

Google tells me that BitmapCompiler is open source.

Here is some version of this program that generates that copyright string…

https://svn.symbianos.org/bmconv/trunk/src/pbmcomp.cpp

Here is the license for that code (which doesn’t appear to cover the
output of that program, as one would expect)…

https://svn.symbianos.org/bmconv/trunk/License.txt

Granted, this is not the same copyright date, so it’s possible that a
newer version made a drastic change to the license, but I would
reasonably doubt it.

I am not a lawyer, but it looks okay to me. If you want to have a lawyer
do further research on behalf of the Fedora project, I’d love to hear
her comments, but I think we’re probably in the clear here.
