World of Warcraft [OFFTOPIC]

Just wanted to give everyone a brief insight into how
tough it can be for someone working full time on a
title to port it on the side. (My sympathy goes out
to Sam here…)

I was hired with the understanding that I WOULD
probably work some of the time on a Linux port of our
game. About last Christmas I had our game compiling
and almost starting up. Even with only a few
programmers at our studio, the momentum in the Windows
product has torn the Linux port to ruin time and
again. In addition to my 50-60 hours/week at the
office working on the windows product I often put in
5-10 hours a week just trying to keep most of the
Linux port compiling.

It’s very tough trying to port an active tree, unless
EVERYONE working on the tree is working on the port. I
remember Stephane (from Loki) telling me about getting
patches to Kohan that would set him back a week or
more of full time effort.

I think I know Sam well enough to know he’s a really
hard worker, and I’m sure he’s got an awful lot on his
plate. IF Blizzard was going to half-heartedly
support Sam spear heading a Linux port, I’m sure they
would expect him to work at least part time doing what
they HIRED HIM for. Even working full time it would be
a Herculean effort (pun almost intended) to,
essentially, compete against the team of programmers
working on the Windows product. In this scenario I’m
certain that SDL would eventually suffer.

Just my 2 cents,

P.S. Shouts out to all the Loki clan… Peace!!!

I’m sorry, I just don’t like this. Hopefully Sam will have the time
to continue development of the SDL, but, with a game like W.O.W. -
will he even be interested?

Man, can we PLEASE not go through this every time Blizzard sends out a
press release?

Yes, I didn’t mean to spark a discussion-fest. Please take this discussion
to an appropriate forum (like www.linuxgames.com)

I am still working on SDL, still enjoying it, and still planning to keep
working on it. I’ve said this several times, and if you don’t believe me,
take a look at the CVS code.

See ya,

I agree that it would be a huge mistake for blizzard to not make linux versions of all their games, and it would be even a larger mistake for them not to use sdl to do so.

Hell, I would even probably buy a blizzard game if it was for linux. (I have never bought one before, the only game I ever found fun was warcraft 2, and I got sick of that pretty fast)

Did you not /realize/ that you were actually replying to Sam’s post,
where he SPECIFICALLY said:

  1. Move this discussion
  2. Do not reply to this e-mail

?!?!?!?
