I need a good GUI library that doesn’t take over the
entire app… just want something that can be put up
when I need (ie… like a login screen or a sign up
screen inside the game).
Also, would be great if it had a multiline textbox
widget too.

What I was looking for was something that could be
drawn directly onto the SDL surface. Im not sure
wxWindows does that since it’s an actual GUI library.
The other SDL GUIs do write to the surface, but they
like to take over the app where you have to jump
hurdles to actually use them.
I guess writing my own would be the only choice… Im
not too great at it though.
What I needed was basic widgets… static text, button,
text box (single line and multi line), and a list box.
I wouldn’t need a combo box… I never use them alot as
it is.

I’m working on a widget set in C for SDL now, but don’t expect it Real Soon.
So far I have horizontal and vertical menus, buttons, checkboxes, and labels
(with optional callbacks). Buttons, checkboxes, and labels can be attached
to menus, and menus can be pop up or fixed. An alert box is just a pop up
menu. The hard stuff to do will be file selectors, multiline edit boxes and
such things. Since my time is limited it may be a few months before it’s
ready for prime time.

I see what you mean now. Something like the ZSNES GUI, but not in
assembly language.
I don’t know if such a thing (in the generic sense) exists, but I am
definitely interested if you find something.

I understand wanting it not to take over you whole application, what I
don’t understand is why you want it in raw C? Widgets are, IMHO, one
place where it is hard to argue that objects make sense. This is
especially true since each widget needs its own state.
Anyway, this is off topic so if you ware interested in a discussion like
this please use my list. You can subscribe at http://www.gameprogrammer.com/mailinglist.html
Where it is on topic.
I have wanted to see a good discussion of the needs for a game
programming gui toolkit for a long time. You don’t have to look at the
problem for long to see that traditional gui tool kits don’t work well
for games.

Hello,
I need a good GUI library that doesn’t take over

Also, would be great if it had a multiline textbox

For those that always offer wxWindows as a solution to the famous GUI
question, have in mind that users in this list are asking for a
SDL-related GUI library. Qt… I don’t know if it has an SDL backend…
A [very little] related subject about all GUI fans/curious:
I’m developing a multiplatform Window System based on SDL, main goals
are:
portability (of course)
alpha transparency (either in a simgle color fill or an entire window)
themes (same philosofhy that alpha)
size (I’m not happy with actual HUGE Window Systems)
speed (that’s why previous mail I sent to this list I asked for
mmx/sse, we’ll need it for slow machines if user wants to use alpha)
I’ll tell you when it’d be ready to test
Pirata
